ARTIST STATEMENT

Mixing exclusively red, yellow and blue MX dyes, Sandi creates hundreds of hues and shades of vibrant fabrics to use in her primitive, graphic artwork. Intriguing colors, fine stitch work, and impeccable finishing, with all fabric edges turned under, make her fiber art pieces truly unique.

A scuba diver and world traveler, Sandi finds inspiration in exotic cultures and repetitive natural patterns. Her close up photography of rich coral reefs and lush rain forests capture creative ideas. She mentally creates her graphic designs over weeks or months before fabric is ever touched. When she sees the design completely with pattern, color and balance, she cuts and sews thousands of pieces to create the image. Illustrative designs such as “It Takes a Village” require days of pencil sketching, which she then cuts apart for pattern pieces. Her artwork is primitive and organic, which reflects her multicultural view of the world.
